Introduction to Anger
-Biblical References to Anger
-Anger is the second most frequently mentioned emotion in Scripture; mentioned more than 455 times in the Old Testament with 375 of those referring to God’s anger; God get angry with us when we disobey Him.
-Anger is a God-given emotion, and is one of the most powerful and controlling of all the emotions. When anger is not properly dealt with, it is one of the most dangerous.
-God gave us anger as an emotion, but He also gave us instructions on how to handle, express, or control it. Some scriptures on Anger:
Proverbs 15:1 – “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger (this shows angry is already in you).”
Proverbs 16:32 – “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”
Proverbs 19:19 – “Hot-tempered people must pay the penalty. If you rescue them once, you will have to do it again.”(If we rescue impatient friends from their problems once, we will probably rescue them again and again). Read rest from bible.
Matthew 5:43-48 – “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For He gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and He sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. 46 If you love only those who love you, what rewards is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. 47 If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. 48 But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.”
Romans 12:19 – “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord.”
Ephesians 4:26 – “Be angry, and do not sin, do not let the sun go down on your wrath.”
James 1:19,20 – “So then, my beloved brethren, let every man swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
-Anger is not the problem. The problem is how we handle or express our anger. An unhealthy expression of anger is Sin.
-In the above Scriptures, it tells us how to handle and not to handle anger so we will not sin when we get angry.
-An appropriate or productive use of anger is when Jesus became angry at the money changers and the Pharisees. An inappropriate or unproductive use of anger was in the Garden of Gethsemane when Peter became angry at the soldiers when they came to arrest Jesus and cut one of their ears off; he sinned by using violence when he was angry.
