For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the fulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places'' ( Eph. 6:12 ). The word of Jesus' day greeted His message and commitment to His call from God with hostility. Rarely did a day or night go by when He did not face opposition and adversity. In virtually every crowd, someone questioned His motives and sought to discredit Him. He was harassed and beset with criticism and trickery without cause. Christ was not surprised by any of this. He knew that His message and God-given calling to bring salvation to the world would evoke division and rejection. Remember what he said in

( Matt. 10:34-36 ).
