"And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, & this life is in His Son--1 John 5:11. Preaching about the life of Jesus awakens an immense craving, but it leaves us with the luxury of sympathy with ourselves--'Oh well, I know that's very high & holy but I wasn't born that way & God can't expect that kind of life from me.' We like to hear about the life of Jesus, about His teachings & works, about His sympathy & tenderness but when we stand face-to-face with Him in the light of God & He convicts us of sin, we RESENT it. Men crave for what the Gospel presents but we resent the way it's presented by Jesus. That's a point that has been lost a lost sight nowadays & every now & then, the Church succumbs to the temptation to which Jesus Christ didn't succumb--the temptation of putting man's needs first, with the result that certain features of the Gospel are eliminated.
