"Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, & of Christ Jesus, Who is our hope"--1 Timothy 1:1. The first question which really concerns a Christian pastor is that of his call to the sacred office. Mistaken notions of this call are responsible for keeping worthy men out of the ministry as well as for alluring some to attempt its tasks who are unqualified & who could serve God more effectively in other spheres. This call consists in a conviction wrought in the heart of a man by the Spirit of God that it's is his duty & privilege to devote himself to the preaching of the Gospel & to the care of souls. This conviction is usually produced by natural means & can be vindicated on reasonable grounds. In its essence, it doesn't differ from the experience of any follower of Christ who, however humble & obscure his task, if wholly submissive to the will of his Master, may have the comfort & peace of believing that he's in the place appointed by the Lord. We must know this is from God & not from our own pridefulness or from people who are "so-called" prophesying this information to us.
