The Text of Texts

"He gave His only-begotten Son."- John 3: 16.

We have reached December. Christmas draws near again, with all its tender associations and mighty meaning. Over against the saddening spectacle of our war-scarred, sinstrangled, twentieth-century world, let us reflect again, with simple-hearted gratitude, on the wonder of…

Theology for beginners

A little exercise for young theologians

Is the title of a short classic by Helmut Thielicke.

If you haven't read it, don't despair. Here's another little exercise for you budding theologians - and historians - instead:

A mosaic and the remains of a building uncovered recently in excavations on the Megiddo prison grounds may belong to the earliest church in the…

Would you care to help or comment please?

Gentle readers,

In January 2011 Scripture Institute will be 10 years old. We have moved from a small organization with little ambition to a grand group of fellow believers, brothers and sisters from around the country and around the world, whose only connection with each other is the love of the Lord and His most sacred word. I in turn will celebrate 40 years in the ministry. We feel that as our goal has been and always will be to "Know…

Rich And Poor In The First Century

"The poor of this world"

The Lord Himself had implied that it was to the poor that the Gospel was more successfully preached. And Paul observed that in Corinth, not many mighty had been called, but most of them were poor (1 Cor. 1:26-28). "Christianity in its beginnings was without doubt a movement of impoverished classes…the Christian congregation originally embraced proletariat elements almost exclusively and was a proletarian organization" (1). It has also been observed that the… Continue

Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:

Purpose To challange my brothers to "study to show themselves approved..."

In your judgment, should the canon of the New Testament still be considered an open question? Or should it be possible to include other works in the New Testament? Athanasius the forth century bishop of Alexandria used the annual…

The "it" and "that" in Ephesians 2:8 what are they?

What Does "It" and "That" Refer to in Ephesians 2:8?

THAT WONDROUS VERSE IN EPHESIANS 2:8 DECLARES: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Paul not only says that salvation is by grace . . . through faith but adds the phrase that not of yourselves. Theologian John Murray states the case very well when he comments on this verse:

When [Paul] says…

The "Old Man" of Romans 6

It is has truly been a joy to write and distribute this work. We have had many encouraging comments, questions, and support from readers and words fail in expressing our thankfulness and gratitude. We pray it will continue to be a blessing to many. We would love to hear from you.

To begin this fortieth year, we turn to a "tough text" that is without question one of the most important verses in Scripture…

Early Christian History "Apostolic Fathers" - Doctoral Program

The term "apostolic fathers" is applied to the writings of the late 1st and early 2nd century, and might be construed to imply that the so-called "fathers" were men who had actually known the apostles personally, and therefore represented the first generation of post-apostolic leadership in the church. Actually, with some exceptions, there is not much evidence of such personal acquaintance with the apostles. Even our earliest writer, Clement of Rome,…

"Assembling ourselves together"

This verse has been close to my heart for most of my thirty-five years of ministry. It has also been a cause of great burden—not the text itself, of course, but rather its implications and the lack of impact those implications seem to have on many believers. Our text declares:…
