The Word Was


 "In the beginning was the Word, & the Word was with God, & the Word was God"--John 1:1. The Lord existed from all eternity. As far as the human mind can go back, the Lord Jesus was there. He was never created; He had no beginning. "The Word was with God" means that He had a separate and distinct personality. He is a real Person Who lived with God. He not only dwelt with God but He Himself is God. The Bible teaches that there is One God and there are three Persons in the Godhead--God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. All three Persons of the Godhead are God. In this verse, two  of the three Persons of the Godhead are mentioned--God the Father and God the Son. It is the first of many clear statements in this Gospel that Jesus Christ is God. It is not enough to say that He is a god, that He is godlike, or that He is divine. The Bible teaches that He is in fact  God!
