"Uniting Christian & Jewish Clergy from Around the World"
There seems to be a deep rift in the body of Christ. On one side are the proponents of pastors seeking formal education. At the other end of the spectrum are the anti-education saints who say formally trained pastors do not depend on the Holy Spirit. This is a troubling dilemma because it unnecessarily pits well meaning Christians against each other.
The reality is both sides have valid concerns. This post will not solve the debate or probably change many minds on either side. However, it is time to declare a cease-fire. First of all there are no magic bullets for effectiveness in ministry. Formal degrees do not guarantee God's anointing or blessings. On the other hand studies show those who have formal training tend to be better prepared to handle the complex nature of ministry.
The AOCI is developing a Bible Institute to help train pastors and leaders who may not have access or financial means to attend bible college or seminary. As one of its founding professors I encourage you to take advantage of these courses. The professors are in the process of assembling a challenging yet practical curriculum for all educational levels. These dedicated servants of God donate their time to enable students from all over the world to have an opportunity to improve their ministerial skills and fall deeper in love with their Lord.
Paul told Timothy, "Study to show thyself approved unto God a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15). We can debate whether this includes formal studies. Obviously there were no seminaries in Paul's day but there was no electricity either, and I don't think most churches would want to do without that.
No matter where you are in your walk with God, one thing is certain, ministry in the twenty-first century is difficult at best and impossible at worst. The better prepared you are, the more effective you will be for the Kingdom. Carpe diem!

Elizabeth, we have a dedicated core of leaders who love the Body of Christ and want to advance His Kingdom. God bless you my sister!
Dr. O'Callaghan, I totally agree with you. In America our education system no longer teaches students to be critical thinkers. My title points out the fact that some in the church view formal education i.e. bible school, seminary as a source of pride short circuiting the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe this is misguided. There are far more examples of untrained pastors abusing their authority and leading their congregations through guilt and bullying tactics.
I am like you, a life long student with many years of formal and informal studies. At age fifty-nine I am working on a Ph.D. In today's challenging world a christian leader needs all the training they can get. God Bless you my brother and thanks for taking the time to comment!
I have a wee difficulty in understanding your title , for I think the the desire for "formal" education is spirit led. Or perhaps this is an anomaly in my case. God led me to study 10-12 hours a day 24/7 for years. now I find that in America education is not valued as much as in Paul's day else he would not have said "Study... My translation of that verse goes this way "You yourself, be diligent to present yourself ...
But thank you for the thought provoking article.
Well said my brother in Christ .
Well said! God bless you in Jesus name Dr. Shanlain and we are blessed to have you numbered among one of our founding Professors for ABTI! Paise the LORD Jesus!

The AOCI exists as a fellowship of Spirit-filled Evangelical and Jewish Clergy for the purpose of: 1) Exalting God 2) Fellowshiping and 3) Divine Networking.
We do NOT advise, nor do we seek, to bring members out of their current denomination or ministerial association. We seek to have a platform to UNITE the Clergy of the world in ways that can benefit not only the Kingdom of God, but also the men and women who faithfully serve their communities, one another, and God.
