" When Alysyn and I spend the weekends living among the homeless and the people on the streets, and there is nothing more heart wrenching than looking into the eyes of a child who is hungry and weathering the conditions no human being should have to weather. As we do outreach 7 days a week, we spend the weekend sitting among the people on the streets and beaches. We listen to them. We sit with them. We eat with them and we sleep among them. We share their lives and their conditions in solidarity. And as we try to meet their needs, we are always in awe of their joy in the midst of their poverty. We learn much from them. And we would all do well to be so poor. For even with such difficulty, poverty has not claimed their smiles. Poverty has not robbed their humanity. Poverty is a violent opponent, but one that can be battled one person at a time. There is no greater blessing than to look into the eyes of these people and see Christ".
