Foreknowledge

"And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;& these whom He predestined, He also called; & these whom He called, He also justified; & these whom He justified, He also glorified"--Romans 8:28-30. Christian theology teaches that God must…

Panting for Water

"As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee O God"--Psalm 42:1. Seeking truth/seeking God are one/the same thing since God is truth. Jesus, the God-Man put it this way: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."--John 14:6. Within the fold of conservative Christianity there are to be found increasing number of persons whose religious lives are marked by a growing hunger after God Himself. They are eager for…

He is Risen

"The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”--Matthew 28:5-7. No record of the resurrection is more majestic than this of Matthew. Other Gospels add features of value but none contains more…

Thy Word is Truth

"Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth"--John 17:17. Whatever God has uttered, since it has come from His mouth, is true & trustworthy. "The words of the LORD are pure words," declares the Psalmist, "as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times"--Psalm 12:6. What has been spoken of by God, Who cannot lie, must be pure and true altogether. Every word which proceeds from the mouth of our Heavenly Father must in the very nature of the case, be absolutely…

MUST we be "meek" in order to be God’s people?

Does being "meek" mean that men must be effeminate (feminine)? MUST we be "meek" in order to be God’s people? YES, indeed, we must! In fact, as with the other of these "beatitudes," the phrase as Jesus put it is exclusive. The idea is, "Blessed are the meek for THEY ALONE shall inherit the earth." This emphatic statement shocked His Jewish audience. Like people today, they knew how to be spiritually proud & self-sufficient. Also, like people today, they were good at following their…

Christians should see sin the way God sees it

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." What did Jesus mean? Christians should see sin the way God sees it and should seek to treat it the way He treats it. Those who cover sin or defend sin certainly have the wrong attitude. We should not only mourn over our sins but we should also meekly submit to God. We are often puffed up & prideful like the Pharisee in Luke 18:11: “The Pharisee stood & was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like…

Blessed are the meek

“Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.”--Matthew 5:5. When someone recognizes his sinfulness and mourns over it, he develops meekness or humility. Meekness does not mean thinking less of yourself than of others, nor does it mean having a low opinion of your own gifts. It means freedom from thinking about yourself one way or the other at all. Can we focus on others so that they can increase in our minds while we decrease in our thoughts? Can we be submissive people living…

But now we have been delivered from the law

“But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.”-- Romans 7:6. This passage lets us know that we have freedom from spiritual liabilities and penalties of God’s Law but not freedom to do what God’s law forbids. There are many things that Christians can do that we choose not to do because of our own prejudices, prideful thinking, and ignorance. As redeemed souls of Christ,… Continue

For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts

“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”--Mark 7:21-23. In this passage, Jesus gives us a list of things as coming from the heart and making us unclean. He begins with evil designs. Every outward act of sin is preceded by an inward act of choice therefore; He begins with the evil… Continue

You Hypocrites

“He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.”--Mk 7:6. Christ quoted Is 29:13 & this prophecy was a perfect fit for the actions of the spiritual phonies of that day; the Pharisees & Scribes. These religious leaders were angered by Jesus who rejected the ceremonies men added to the law that God had made. They followed the traditions of men because such teachings… Continue

An overseer

"An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach"--1 Timothy 3:2. These are all wonderful attributes to have and they each deserve our attention however, today I want to focus our attention on the word temperate which means having power or control over all his passions. We apply the term now with reference to abstinence from intoxicating liquors. In the Scriptures, it includes not only that, but much much more. It… Continue

Let the children alone

But Jesus said, "Let the children alone, & do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."--Mt 19:14. Since the kingdom of heaven belong to such as these, this is one reason that we need to get the Gospel message into the hearts of these children. The reason for trying to get the Gospel message into the hearts of children is so that when they reach the age of accountability, they will make a decision for Christ. Too often, the world system has such… Continue

People today are starving

People today are starving for God's Word but they don't know it. They're starving, they're hungry, they're reaching out, they're grasping. They realize the vacancies in their life, the hollow places, the shallow places, the lack of insight, the lack of understanding. They cannot solve the problems and dilemmas of life. They are starving for God's Word and they do not know it and are being offered a lot of substitutes that don't help. God has ordained that His Word be brought to…

The Bible is Inspired

The reason that the Bible is unlike any other book in the world has to do with the fact that it & it alone is inspired by God. When we say that the Bible is “inspired,” what do we mean? The English word “inspire” comes from the Latin inspirare, which means “to breathe into.” The Bible is the inspired Word of God in that He “breathed into” the writers of the Bible the message He wanted them to produce. Since it is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16-17), the Bible is free from all error in its…

If anyone wants to be first

Sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, "If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all" -Mk 9:35. I must confess that as a parent I don't always model servanthood. Too often I model the opposite. I enter a situation where something is needed, & I feel the urge to take care only of myself. I find myself rationalizing how busy I am, how tired I am, or how much I have already given of myself. I have the time, the energy, & the ability, but I just sit… Continue

Evangelism and Church Growth

I was given a newsletter titled Gospel Minutes: The Gospel by Proclamation in Minutes of Meditation and the elderly couple asked me to read it and get back with them on what I thought. Being a busy person (arrogant and self-serving), I put it aside and didn't give it a second thought since I had Church Sports Camp to help run, sermons to complete, Sunday School Lessons to prepare, AFJROTC Camps to facilitate, school scheduling, etc....., it was far off the scope.

Today, I decided to… Continue

Prayer for today

‘Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You. You show lovingkindness to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them—the Great, the Mighty God, whose name is the LORD of hosts. Life on earth with sinful man nor death on a cross was too difficult. You have risen from the dead and reign forever and for all these reasons, I stand in awe. Help us now this… Continue
